SOL Group’s science-based climate targets approved

The Science Based Targets -initiative (SBTi) has approved SOL Group’s near-term and long-term climate targets. SOL’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets are therefore aligned with the latest climate science and support efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

SOL Group aims to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions from its operations and purchased energy by 47.2% by 2035 from a 2025 base year. The Group also aims to reduce emissions from key Scope 3 categories by 66.3% per service hour over the same period.

In addition, SOL aims to ensure that by 2030, suppliers covering 64% of its procurement spend have set science-based targets.

SOL aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain by 2050. By 2050, SOL aims to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90% and emissions from key Scope 3 categories by 97% per service hour.

“Our goal is to systematically reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The approved climate targets provide a measurable direction for SOL’s own actions, extend our climate work across the entire value chain and, at the same time, support our customers’ climate efforts. Achieving these emissions reductions means that within the next ten years, we will be able to provide services to our customers with nearly half the emissions. We can provide our customers with increasingly accurate information on the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the services we provide,” says Marja Innanen, Director of Sustainability and Communications.

SOL Group will work towards its emissions reduction targets by electrifying its vehicle and machinery fleet, increasing the use of renewable fuels and transitioning to renewable or low-emission energy at its sites. The Group will also improve energy efficiency, reduce transport-related emissions through more efficient logistics, favour lower-emission travel options and support employees in making more sustainable commuting choices.

A significant share of SOL Group’s greenhouse gas emissions arises in its value chain. SOL will therefore strengthen engagement with its suppliers, with the aim that suppliers covering at least 64% of procurement spend have science-based targets. The Group will also increase the use of lower-emission products and services, extend product lifetimes and develop procurement criteria to support emissions reductions across the value chain.

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a corporate climate action organisation that enables companies to set greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets in line with the latest climate science. The SBTi develops standards, tools and guidance for science-based target setting and independently assesses companies’ targets.
